The opening of Phu Quoc International Airport
The stunningly beautiful Phu Quoc Island, off Southern Vietnam is now linked with the world. A brand spanking new international airport was opened on Sunday with the inaugural landing of a Vietnam Airlines ATR72 flight.
Initially Vietnam Airlines will run 67 services a week to and from Ho Chi Minh, Bach Rang and Can Tho cities. On December 12 the national carrier will introduce 5 flights a week from Hanoi. With a distance of 2,107 km this will be the longest domestic route in Vietnam, with an estimated flying time of 2 hours 25 minutes. Also on December 12, budget carrier, VietJet will begin flying one flight a day from HCMC.
The new Airport received its first flight, an ATR 72 aircraft of national carrier Vietnam Airlines (VNA), early on Sunday, marking the beginning of its official operation.
The 900-ha terminal, with 3,000 meter-long and 45 meter-wide runway, is capable of receiving Boeing 777s, Boeing 747- 400s, and similar aircraft, and some 2.6 million passengers a year.
The new airport will replace the old Phu Quoc Airport in Duong Dong Town, which has been shut down.
