For the time being cash is king in Ho Chi Minh City but ATMs are everywhere in Saigon, many accessible 24 hours a day. Maximum withdrawal limits vary depending on the ATM. In some cases you may be able to take out up to VND10,000,000, but usually the limits are far lower. You can make several withdrawals in succession (up to your personal limit), though you'll be hit with transaction fees each time. Fees are usually in the range of VND20,000 but keep in mind that your home bank may ding you with an additional fee.
Most major, foreign-issued credit and debit cards are accepted at ATMs in HCMC. Travellers can access Plus and Cirrus networks via HSBC- and ANZ-operated cash machines and many others. Use common sense when withdrawing money. Key in your PIN inconspicuously and keep to well-lit, frequented cash terminals. These ATMs are commonly found inside major banks, western-style grocery stores and hotels, or alongside busy streets. More often than not, ATM's will spit out dong in VND500,000 denominations, which could be frustrating if you intend to pay for a motorcycle taxi ride or a streetside bowl of noodles.
