The Perfect Hangover Cure at Latest Recipe
“Hair of the dog” - A colloquial expression in the English language referring to a small measure of drink, intended to cure a hangover.
It’s 10:00 am on a Sunday morning and last night’s messy shenanigans are a literal blur. There are many ‘tried and true’ methods for curing the dull head throb of the morning after a big night out on the town, but I have always turned back to the same remedy… continue on with the party.
There really is nothing better than a ‘lazy Sunday’. The last chance for us to switch off and recharge before the start of another hectic work week. For those of us that reside in frenetic hubs such as Ho Chi Minh City, Sunday Brunch provides the perfect opportunity to lounge the afternoon away with friends or family, good food, and a much needed drink.
Arriving to Latest Recipe Restaurant at Le Méridien Saigon, I am greeted by the sweet strums of live acoustic guitars and the intoxicating aroma of freshly shucked seafood and grilled meats. I am shown to my table and welcomed by incredible panoramic views of the Saigon River and bright smiles from accommodating staff. Large tables beside me host warm family gatherings - parents hand feed their children juicy chunks of lobster tail while others eagerly attack whole steamed mud crabs. Tables are scattered with goblets of red wine and flutes of champagne, kept abundantly filled by the attentive waitstaff. The room is filled with the buzz of laughter, music and love, but the overall vibe remains relaxed and loungey. A glass is placed before me and as the waiter pours me a glass of Taittinger it feels as if I have just sat down to a gorgeous family siesta by the Italian Riviera. This is going to be a good day.
The Sunday Discovery Brunch at Latest Recipe Restaurant allows diners to enjoy a curated gastronomic journey at Le Méridien Saigon. Apart from the lure of free flow Taittinger champagne, sparkling rosé, house wine, craft beer, cocktails, and a dedicated Bloody Mary bar, the highlight of the brunch service is the quaint little cooking cart that circles the room, serving made-to-order table-side dishes of the day. Executive Chef, Simone Murru - originally from Turin in Northern Italy - proudly works the room and engages guests with passion and vigour, adding to the hospitable feel of a welcoming Italian family. Today’s cart offerings include salmon tartare with fresh mango and banana blossom, plump ravioli with cheese and mushroom that is perfectly al dente and feels like a tight warm hug from Nonna, and my personal favourite, crêpes suzette flambéed with Cointreau and passionfruit, which is so addictively sticky and decadent I order seconds.
Other highlights from the generous buffet selection include sashimi, freshly shucked French oysters, grilled-to-order seafood, roast meats, Asian delights, French cheeses, cold cuts and a spectacular dessert station complete with chocolate fondue fountain and housemade gelato. The wonderland of sweet treats are sure to keep any child beaming with glee, but for those who prefer to spend Sunday Brunch kid free, there is the Kid’s Corner at Latitude 10 just downstairs, where parents may leave their children with a nanny so they can enjoy a more intimate brunch time.
For diners that choose to continue with the party after brunch, Le Méridien Saigon offers After Brunch Time from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm upstairs on the ninth floor at Bamboo Chic Restaurant. Enjoy breathtaking sunset views over Saigon River with buy-one-get-one free offered to all Sunday Brunch guests - applicable to Sapporo beer, house wine and house spirits.
… We are the last table still standing. The sky over the Saigon River has turned a dreamy shade of powder blue and yellow. I finish the last mouthful of Taittinger left in my glass and feel satisfied and content. As we roll ourselves out onto bustling Ton Duc Thang Street and return to the ‘real world’ I notice that my nagging hangover from this morning is long gone. I am ready for Monday, but can’t wait until next Sunday, when I can return and do this all over again.
