The New City Planning Exhibition Centre
Across the water from District 1’s riverfront, development is going on at a cracking pace in the Thu Thiem Ward of District 2. Directly opposite the Renaissance Hotel a strange metalwork structure has been baffling Saigon’s residents for some time as it continues to grow. This is in fact going to be the new City Planning Exhibition Centre (CPEC). It will sit, when finished, in the central square of what will be known as the Thu Thiem New Urban Area. It’s a futuristic designed building that will create an interesting new venue for locals and tourists alike.
Construction work for the project was awarded to ATAD in 2015. ATAD Steel Structure Corporation was founded in 2004 and specialises in providing complete construction solutions; this includes the design, fabrication and erection of high-quality steel structure products. The company has undertaken many heavy structural industry and commercial projects, bringing not just exhibition centres, but also airports, railway stations, supermarkets, workshops, warehouses and showrooms to the general public.

The Size of the City Planning Exhibition Centre
CPEC, when completed, will house 18,307 square metres of exhibition space located over six storeys, including basement. It will be utilised as a space for the organisation of planning and architecture exhibitions in the future. The project has a special structure, incorporating box beam columns, which are the highlight of the whole building. CPEC, when open, will be a fully eco-friendly, energy efficient building and will adapt to climate change.
The Exhibition space will also be a popular destination for Saigon citizens and investors, who will be able to study architecture, urban culture, tourism and sightseeing. This is not confined to the Thu Thiem New Urban Area specifically, but will cover the whole of Ho Chi Minh City as well.

Developing the 1,730 acre Thu Thiem Peninsula has dominated the thinking of urban developers for a decade or more. The idea of building a new urban area has been the subject of much discussion, but work is now well underway. The extension of the East-West Highway and the opening of the Thu Thiem Tunnel in 2011 has seen a massive change in the traffic flow in and out of the Central Business District. That being said, the enormous increase in the number of four wheel vehicles has all but reached saturation point already.
According to CBRE Vietnam, one of the largest commercial real estate companies in the country, Thu Thiem is ideally placed to become Ho Chi Minh City’s version of Pudong. Transportation links with Districts 1, 9, Thu Duc and the rest of District 2 are extremely good. It was with this in mind that the local government introduced the development plan in 1997.

The whole Thu Thiem peninsula has been cleared ready for the full development. It is planned to have international financial and commercial buildings, the aforementioned central square, an outdoor sports stadium, a new television tower and a complete residential area. The US$1.2 billion Empire City complex here will, when completed, consist of an 86-storey observation tower, five-star hotel, shopping mall, and of course office and apartment buildings. It will cover the whole of the area to the north of Mai Chi Tho and along the Saigon River. It is due for completion in 2022.
The City Planning Exhibition Centre will be a worthy addition to the area and a great place for visitors to see what is in store for the future of Saigon.
