Da Tien Elephant Rides in Dalat

On a scenic trip around the glistening Tuyen Lam Lake in Dalat, dotted with Sacom Resort’s ubiquitous villas, you may notice a stone path bursting with sky-blue hydrangea.

If you head down you’ll reach Da Tien, where you can usually find a roped elephant awaiting guests. You can pet the aging animal; he’s quite friendly.

The elephant’s conditions are questionable, so if you’re conscious of such issues, avoid the rides altogether and head further below into the minority-employed restaurant and lakefront area. If you’re itching to get on the creature for a 15 minute (or more) ride, the prices are listed below:

15 minutes: VND 200,000 / two people
30 minutes: VND 400,000 / two people
60 minutes: VND 800,000 / two people

The scenery offers the best of Dalat’s highland environment: fresh, evergreen pines edging a sparkling lake amidst a cool breeze. Sit down at the restaurant (good luck getting an order on off-days), and take in the view. Don’t forget to get a peek at the curious menu items as well.

We were particularly curious about the “Chicken chilli discharge”.
The cafe is a nice place to chow down on some strange game with a small group, or indulge in a cool cup of Vietnamese ice coffee while you marvel at the lake.

While Da Tien will certainly not appeal to everybody, it is a nice spot to settle down for 30 minutes to an hour. Be warned, however - the bathrooms are far from ideal, and it is recommended to bring your own toilet paper and sanitizer along in case you need to pay a visit.

Otherwise, enjoy the hydrangea-filled stroll.
