Like everywhere else in Vietnam, Can Tho is home to many pagodas and other religious buildings. Vietnam is a very tolerant country when it comes to most things and religion and the freedom to follow a religion are no exceptions. So, even though Vietnam is mainly a secular country, areas like The Mekong Delta and Can Tho in particular have seen the building of churches and temples.
There are two churches in Can Tho, due to the hot weather, services are usually held in the evenings. There are of course also pagodas. Phat Hoc is an extremely unusual looking pagoda, resembling an old hotel more than a pagoda. It is a three story building with an alter on each floor. The Ong Pagoda was built by the Chinese at the end of the 19th Century. It is is also the centre for Chinese religious and cultural activity for the area. Quang Duc Pagoda (aka Munirangsyaram Pagoda) is an authentic beautiful temple with delightful architecture and serene tranquility. There are many large statues of Buddha here.
