SAIGON INSPIRATION SHOPPING
Intro to Shopping
Shopping in Ho Chi Minh City is like a great buffet dinner with a myriad of dishes to choose from. You can find everything from luxury products to local crafts and every price point to go along with them. Tourists come from all over the world to experience Saigon’s chaotic Ben Thanh Market and Saigon Square, to get lost in countless glistening tables of gold and gems, and for the very best bargaining. Unsurprisingly, the city is renowned as the commercial hub of Vietnam.
Fashion is also a key aspect of the Ho Chi Minh City shopping scene, which features the finest knock-offs, internationally renowned designers, and up-market clothing chains. It is easy to lose yourself among the many boutique stores, international brands, and colorful bargain dens within the winding streets of this city. Whether it’s an impeccable Jimmy Choo shoe that does it for you or a fluffy no-brand sweater, you will probably be impressed by the choices.
Tailors are also key to a Ho Chi Minh City shopping experience and are often the best option in terms of price and custom cuts. You can read our guide: Finding a Good Tailor in Ho Chi Minh City for some great tips.
Jewelry is another popular product for shoppers. You can find every type of accessory from the sparkly chains and chunky rings of Saigon Square to high-end precious stones. Boasting many well-known chains and custom design stores, Ho Chi Minh City offers a host of choices when it comes to the jewelry buying scene.
Finally, for those who like to adorn their houses rather than themselves, Saigon offers a wide range of options for stylish housewares, art, and home decor. Lining the streets in District 1, talented local artists will paint good copies of well-known works, original designs, and realizations of your family photos for a very reasonable price.
With custom furniture design, ornate handicrafts, and clean-cut modern fittings, available in every district you will find everything you need for your home in Saigon’s warehouses and custom shops.
Q&A

There are fewer vendors selling English language newspapers in Saigon these days but they can still be found sometimes along Dong Khoi Street in the heart of District 1. Otherwise, it’s worth checking the lobbies of any of the five-star hotels in the area for titles like The New York Times, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian, or The Australian, which are generally available a day or two after publication in their home countries.
Local English language daily papers Vietnam News and the Saigon Times are also distributed. If this area draws a blank, try the biggest bookstore in town:

Introduction to Fashion section
Just like in New York, Paris, or Hong Kong, fashion in Ho Chi Minh City is a major part of urban life. After all, what we wear can define us.From the classiest Chanel cardigan to a unique boutique clutch, shopping in Ho Chi Minh City is a dream for fashionistas, trend setters, and style novices alike. The streets are full of boutiques, high street knock-offs, fashion outlets and up market plazas.
From handmade silk ao dai to the softest of refined cotton, Saigon’s designers are both creative and dedicated to quality. If you don’t find the perfect fit in traditional ready-to-wear shops, why don’t you try looking for a tailor-made suit or dress? The craftsmanship of Vietnamese artisans will impress you. To get a good bargain on your custom-made piece, you can read our article: How to Find a Good Tailor in Saigon.
For high-end fashion retailers, Ho Chi Minh City abounds with money-spending opportunities. Head to the city’s central D1, near the opera, for a glimpse of all that is chic. In and around Dong Khoi Street, you will find all the top international brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Christian Dior, and more. Whether it’s window shopping or serious spending that you’re after, it’s always a pleasure to brush elbows with Saigon’s elite for an afternoon.
By contrast, sometimes it can be just as fun to get lost in cheap knock-offs, nearly-free underwear, and $2 skinny jeans. Ho Chi Minh City’s D5 has a lot to offer when it comes to fabulous trashy outfits and bargain basement finds. Apart from anything else, the sheer number of clothes the store owners manage to cram into their tiny shops is simply remarkable! And your purchase is sure to make you happy too since it probably only cost you VND 100,000! Saigon Square and Lucky Plaza are also good options for inexpensive knock-offs.
Finally, for those who reject extremes, Ho Chi Minh City has an extensive happy medium. Neither super expensive nor super cheap, high-street fashion chains and department stores are becoming increasingly popular among the city’s younger population. Chain stores such as Zara, Mango, and Forever 21 offer quality, international clothes and accessories that won’t upset your wallet. With new indie shops and international brands opening in sunny Saigon every day, it is easier than ever to follow the latest fashion trends whether you have the budget of a backpacker or the spending power of a pasha.

Introduction to Art Galleries section
Ho Chi Minh City is full of artistry – from the ornate details that adorn its temples to traditional fine art forms that date back centuries. One only has to wander through the city to find inspiration in the creative talents of Saigon dwellers throughout history. But what if you’d like to take a piece of Vietnamese art home with you? Where can you go to window-shop, purchase works, and/or participate in Ho Chi Minh City’s growing art scene? In this section, we’ll give some of our favorite addresses for the city’s best art galleries and a few tips about what to purchase.
The fine art gallery scene is small in comparison to some cities. However, the galleries that have managed to establish a name and clientele for themselves take art seriously. Two of the most well-known Saigon art galleries are Galerie Quynh and Apricot Gallery, both in District 1. You’ll find contemporary and classical art forms as well as artists from Vietnam and abroad. These artistic spaces are known for representing investment – worthy artists, so you won’t see rip-offs of famous paintings or gaudy craft art here.
Saigon’s most well-known fine art galleries are primarily located in District 1. They tend to showcase contemporary artists – photographers, painters, and sculptors in elegant settings. Many of them have the goal to introducing emerging and established artists in Vietnam to the outside world through expositions and permanent collections.
For photography, Noirfoto Darkroom-Studio-Gallery is both a gallery and a space for aspiring or professional photographers to gather and discuss their craft. The work of the French photographer Réhahn is also very popular both in Vietnam and abroad. His galleries in Ho Chi Minh City are currently closed, but his fine art photo books of Vietnam’s rural areas are available in upscale gift shops throughout the city.
Whether you live in Ho Chi Minh City or you’re looking for a memorable memento of your travels, it’s worth stopping by a few art galleries to get a sense of the country’s creative spirit. The price points can range from under $100 USD to well into six digits.
If your tastes run more towards traditional Vietnamese art forms like sand, lacquer or embroidery art, you can find an array of inexpensive pieces at Ben Thanh Market. For higher-quality and elegant details, XQ Saigon on Le Loi street in District 1 has a selection of expertly embroidered pictures. For mind-bending 3D sand pictures, Thanh Cat My Art in District 7 is well-known for their intricate (and rather kitschy) works. Lacquer works can be found all over the city in tourist shops.
Reproduction art is also a strong industry in Ho Chi Minh City. It can feel a bit incongruous to be wandering down a nondescript alleyway and come face to face with seemingly realistic Van Goghs and Renoirs but it’s actually a common sight to see masterful paintings spilling out onto sidewalks.
Reproduction artists in Saigon are often highly skilled; many are graduates of the city’s art colleges who are simply looking to make a living doing what they do best. Most of these fake art shops are located on Bui Vien in HCMC’s infamous backpacker district.
Now that you have an idea of all the inspiring treasures you can find in Ho Chi Minh City’s art galleries, you’ll just need to seek out a blank wall in your home for your perfect piece of art.

Introduction to Malls section
Shopping malls in Ho Chi Minh City are filled with luxury fashion, famous cosmetic brand names, perfume, fine jewellery, souvenirs, home decor, furniture, books, and electronics to name just a few choices. There are commercial centres in almost every district, though the majority are in District 1. Each mall has its own style, from the ultra-modern Saigon Centre to the posh Takashimaya with its excellent Japanese eateries. There’s a shopping experience for everyone in Ho Chi Minh City.
If, on the other hand, you’re looking for trendy, off-brand merchandise and knock-off fashion accessories, Saigon Square is your best bet in District 1. This labyrinthian commercial centre is set up in tiny stalls with a variety of styles all smashed together. You won’t find a food court but you will find a variety of men’s, women’s and kid’s clothing, accessories, flashy kid’s toys, and some electronics of questionable quality.
Inside the traditional malls like Parkson Plaza, Diamond Plaza and Vincom Centre, you can expect to find well-known international clothing brand names such as Zara, Adidas, and H&M alongside luxury fashion such as Dior, Gucci and more. But customers don’t only come to shop!
Saigon’s shopping malls are also great places to meet up for a meal or a beverage. Food courts and stand alone restaurants attract many locals with the promise of good meals and a fun ambiance. Beyond the food courts, there are even some upscale restaurants to choose from in Takashimaya, Saigon Center, and Vincom Megamall. Whether you enjoy eating Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Indian, or western cuisine or if you’re simply looking for a delicious bubble tea, you’re sure to find a great selection in any of Ho Chi Minh City’s established commercial centres.
Saigon’s malls are truly a one stop location for all your shopping and entertainment needs. Alongside the stores and restaurants, you’ll also find luxury gyms, beauty centres, salons, arcades, bowling alleys, movie theatres, and even an ice skating rink!
Whether you come for a specific brand, an afternoon of leisure, or simply to enjoy strong air conditioning on a particularly warm afternoon, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for in one of Ho Chi Minh City’s shopping centres.

Introduction to Home Decor section
Whether you’ve just moved to Ho Chi Minh City and are decorating your first apartment or you’re shopping for a home decor souvenir to remember your trip by, this section will give you all the best addresses to help you create beautifully adorned rooms.
Interior design depends on your personal style and individual budget. But don’t worry, both affordable and high-end homeware, furniture, and even design advice are all readily available in Saigon! Our list will help you find the best shops for high-quality, stylish home decor whether your tastes run towards Nordic minimalism or luxurious gold and velvet furnishings.
Ho Chi Minh City’s home decor shops are visited by travellers, expats and locals for their intricate craftsmanship and contemporary designs. Vietnam is a factory hub for beautifully crafted furniture that is often exported at much higher prices abroad. Many well-known European and North American furniture brands source and build their wares in Vietnam, meaning HCMC residents have a strong advantage when it comes to styling their homes. In addition, international design trends favour Asian style home decor because of its zen atmosphere and craftsmanship.
Young designers in Ho Chi Minh City have helped take the interior design market from traditional to innovative. There are many places offering products made with natural materials such as bamboo and water hyacinth as well as industrial style pieces that seem to be featured in every new coffee shop or cool bar in town.
If you’re planning on redecorating your home, check out our style guide below to figure out the ideal location to shop for unique interior decor in Ho Chi Minh City.
Your first stop on your interior design shopping spree should be Xuan Thuy street in Thu Duc City. Here you’ll find a wealth of furniture stores such as Linh’s Furniture, Sadec District, and Decosy among other shops and restaurants. Linh’s is ideal for those of you who are looking for a tranquil Asian style with contemporary touches. They also take custom requests. Decosy has more of a contemporary vibe; this large design shop has a bit of everything for relatively reasonable prices. Sadec District is a one stop shop for ceramic vases, candles, dishware, and other decorative items.
Next on your shopping tour, head a few blocks over to Tran Ngoc Dien. This tree-lined shopping street is great for finding antique treasures and small home decor items. Villa Royale, In the Mood Saigon, and Diabolo Square are a few of the stand-out locations to visit. Save your trip to Villa Royale for high tea time. In addition to their well-sourced antique furnishings, sculptures, art and more, they offer a delectable high-tea set menu complete with home made scones and tiny tea sandwiches.
If you’re more into the idea of a treasure hunt than a modern furniture shop, head to Le Cong Kieu Street, otherwise known as Antiques Street in District 1. You’ll find a wide variety of items from dusty model ships to seemingly authentic 17th-century sculptures. But be aware that many of these are replicas of pricier antiques, so don’t get fooled into paying top-dollar for a well-made knock-off.
That said, it’s still fun to wander down the street and browse through old propaganda posters and more. If you don’t mind the fact that the pieces might not be as old as they look, you can still find some cool decorations to take home.
Regardless of your style and budget, you’re sure to have fun looking through Ho Chi Minh City’s incredible array of home decor items

Introduction to Souvenir section
There are many choices for souvenir shopping in Ho Chi Minh City from custom clothing to traditional handicrafts. To keep you from getting lost with all the choices (and shopping locations), we lay out the most popular options in this section. In our opinion, the best souvenirs to buy in Saigon are the things that will truly remind you of the spirit of Vietnam.
Things such as traditional ao dai garments, embroidery, artwork, silk accessories, authentic jewellery, street market treasures, and even popular Vietnamese food products make great gifts and souvenirs to bring home. Vietnam is so full of fascinating sights, sounds, tastes, and emotions that you’d be hard-pressed not to take a single souvenir back from your travels.
For those of you who love the artsy side of Saigon, seek out affordable art pieces such as embroidery painting, lacquer and sand paintings, photographs, and handmade musical instruments. If you prioritise fairtrade, there are many items that benefit the ethnic groups of Vietnam such as artisanal quilts, indigo-dyed fabric, and other handicrafts. Fancy something timeless? Handmade leather items, silk scarves and artisanal products abound in shops such as The House of Saigon.
Small knickknacks and generic souvenirs are readily available in busy areas like the backpacker district and Ben Thanh Market. You’ll want to haggle to get the best rate, so check out our tips on how to bargain in Ho Chi Minh City here.
Luxury goods and brand-name high-ticket items can be found in malls and specialised shops around Ho Chi Minh City. Jewellery makers are scattered throughout Saigon and offer an endless variety of rings, necklaces, earrings, and other accessories at reasonable prices.
Now that you have an idea of all the treasures you can find in Saigon, here is something that should not be on your shopping list: electronics. Cell phones, gadgets and other electronics are nothing special, and are priced as high (if not more) than in Western countries. You’re better off sticking to the traditional items for which Vietnam is known.

Introduction to Tailors
There are many benefits to shopping for the perfect custom tailor in Ho Chi Minh City.
Are you looking to create a perfect evening outfit? A copy of a cool new trend or your own unique design? Maybe you need a wedding dress!? Or perhaps you’d simply like alterations on a favourite piece? Vietnam attracts tourists from all over the world who are interested in bringing their creative ideas to life, and there’s no better place than in the metropolitan hub of Ho Chi Minh City.
Though not as renowned for artisanal skills as the UNESCO World Heritage town of Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City is a top option for everything tailor-made in Vietnam. With a plethora of shops offering unique designs, alterations, copies, and more, tailoring in Ho Chi Minh is affordable and inspiring. But be sensible: if you ask for a designer wedding dress at a shop specializing in men’s suits, it’s unlikely that you’ll be walking out in your dream dress.
Saigon’s tailors are professionals at taking luxurious high-end fashion items and creating an equally beautiful copy, at a quarter of the price. Most tailors will take your waist, height, and other measurements before they even consider price, so we advise wearing something light and thin when you visit your chosen shop to make this process easier.
Cheap, midrange and luxury services are available with a variety of style preferences. Once you know what you’re after you can select the best tailor to make it. But then there’s the question of fabric. Where should you buy it? One of the most interesting options is to buy it from one of the city’s numerous traditional markets where you’ll find an abundance of colors and styles. For more tips, you can check our article “What Fabric Shops Do We Recommend in District 1.”
Before you purchase your material make sure you know how much to buy! Talk to your tailor about your measurements and how much material they will require. For more details about exactly the best places to go for custom clothes head to “Finding a Good Tailor in Ho Chi Minh City.”
