Hospital for Tropical Diseases

The hospital is located on an area of about 4.6 hectares. The emergency department has the modern equipment required to treat and research infectious disease. A special laboratory was built in 2002 in order to meet international standards, including Oxford’s laboratory (Oxford University Clinical Research Unit — oucru.org). Located inside the hospital, doctors and scientists are researching new treatments against dengue fever.

Cho Ray Hospital

Founded in 1900, Cho Ray Hospital is the largest general hospital in the city, with 1200 beds. The facility was re-equipped in 1974 with the help of the Japanese government. The hospital has 35 clinical, 11 sub-clinical, and eight functional departments. Yearly, it provides treatment for nearly half a million outpatients and 67,000 inpatients. Chợ Rẫy has many specialties including tropical diseases, urology, oncology, orthopaedics, cardiology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, hepatology, general internal medicine, plastic surgery, physical therapy, etc. However, it is most renowned for its emergency department and neurosurgery/head injury services. There is blood bank where you can go for blood donation.

Institut Pasteur in HCMC

The Institut Pasteur International Network is composed of 32 institutes worldwide that are recognised as specialists in microbiological surveillance. The first Institut Pasteur outside of France was created in 1891 in HCMC to vaccinate people against rabies and smallpox. The Institute is researching dengue fever, HIV, diarrhoea, leptospirosis, and poliomyelitis. It is monitoring infectious diseases, products vaccines (BCG, rabies), and provides medical tests.

The University Medical Hospital

The university owns one medical centre with 400 beds for postgraduate training and medical research, 44 consultation rooms and 16 operating theatres. There are also 30 hospitals in the city that act as teaching satellites for the university. Some of their 700 doctors are well-known professors of medicine and pharmacy. Specialities include pharmacology, fundamental sciences, cardiology, ENT, surgery, ophthalmology, neurology, traditional medicine and community health care.
