As can be seen in our Ho Chi Minh City nightlife review, there are endless options for bars, nightclubs, coffee shops, and lounges in Saigon. Hanging out, meeting friends, partying, or simply in venues like these is part of daily life for Vietnamese, ex-pats, and tourists alike.
‘Hipster’ and artsy coffee shops abound but are hidden from plain sight!—use your discerning eye to discover them! Often tucked in the corner of an alley or inside an unassumingly residential compound, seek them out if you want to taste authentic Vietnamese coffee—many sources their coffee from family farms in the Central Highlands. Coffee shops often double up as juice bars. With prices generally between VND 30,000 to VND 50,000 for a fresh, healthy juice pressed in front of you, you have no excuses for not kicking your habit of drinking soft drinks. You might find fruits you are familiar with but don’t shy away from local flavors like soursop, guava, ambarella, kumquat, custard-apple, or sapodilla—exotic sensations that will leave a memorable impression on your mind during your travels in Vietnam.
Once the sun sets, beer bars will start welcoming office workers, students, and friends. Also called ‘beer gardens’, you can count hundreds of them in Saigon; great meeting places for an after-hour drink with colleagues. Some are super luxurious with loud techno music, beautiful hostesses, and strict door policies, while others are much more easygoing, consisting of a few open-air tables. A more exclusive way to enjoy your evening with a classy drink is to visit one of Ho Chi Minh City’s rooftop lounges. Almost non-existent 10 years ago, they have mushroomed along with high-rise buildings. Chill Skybar used to be the most famous of them, just 5 minutes away from most of the city’s top attractions. You also have scores of bars ranging from ex-pat drinking holes to neighborhood dive bars. Live music is available in many locations such as Saigon Saigon in Caravelle Hotel, Decibel, Catwalk, The Log at the Gem Center, the Rooftop Garden at The Rex Hotel, and more. Our listings below will give you many ideas of where to go for a great night out drinking.
Nightclubs in Saigon will please even the most demanding party-goers. Trendy venues are no slouch compared to many in Europe or the U.S. The latest pop hits and remixes will be the mainstay at popular clubs such as LUSH, with experimental electronic music in high demand at places such as The Observatory.
Prices are affordable! A cocktail or a glass of wine rarely costs more than $10 US, even at trendy venues. Most nightclubs close around 3 a.m., but you can keep the party going until early morning at several after-hour drinking holes, such as along the infamous backpacker streets of Pham Ngu Lao and Bui Vien.

Introduction to Cafés
Once upon a time, a traveller would never leave Vietnam without a sip of Ca Phe Sua Da–infamously (and purported) one of the world’s strongest milk coffees made from robusta beans and condensed milk.
The last 10 years have taken the S-shaped country through a coffee renaissance… specialty cafes now sit alongside traditional sidewalk cafes, serving the best beans from Vietnam and beyond. It is now easy to get a Melbourne-style cup of espresso, Americano and even Japanese-style pour-overs made with medium and light-roast beans
On the other end of the spectrum are specialty cafes that draw upon Vietnamese youths’ love of nature. Cafes such as Every Half are an example of a recent trend that combines specialty espresso and ‘green architecture’ that has evolved to fit the city’s peculiar style of real estate and heritage city planning.
Other chains such as La Viet coffee bring the cradle of caffeine, Vietnam’s temperate Lam Dong province, to the table by glorifying the pleasant flavors of Dalat’s sought-after Arabica beans–increasing common but still rare in a country that is both famous and infamous for being the largest exporter of Arabica’s caffeine-filled relative; Robusta!

For travellers that prefer a more relaxed atmosphere for socialising and alcohol, Ho Chi Minh City offers both local and international options.
Over the last few years, the vibrant city has seen a cocktail trend that has since exploded into different subcategories of venues. You’ll find Western-style speakeasies hidden in old apartment blocks alongside modern mixology-focused joints that exploit Southeast Asian flavours; heavy on tropical fruits, fermented produce and even exotics such as palm sugar and fish sauce! Venues such as Layla captivate young locals with beautiful drinks and daily specials.
Craft beer taprooms are also a favourite amongst the expat community. Notable breweries include Heart of Darkness, Pasteur Street and East West Brew Company which you’ll find conveniently located at the heart of Saigon’s District 1. Many taprooms are creative and competitive–you’ll often find new ‘pilot’ small batch experimental brews which keep customers returning. Craft beers from the United States are also common at taprooms such as Malt which serve a selection of the city’s and world’s best beers.
