As an expat or foreigner in Saigon, when you decide to get serious with a Vietnamese, always remember that it is all about family. Asking for a chance to meet his/her parents is considered courteous in Vietnam; don’t forget to bring small gifts – usually wine or flowers – to show your respect. Pay attention to what the leader of the family says and make a sincere attempt to follow all of the customs. First impressions are everything and will sometimes directly determine whether or not another date is likely.

Try not to look too horrified when his or her grandmother asks, “When will you get married?” Blunt questions like this are common. If you feel uncomfortable answering such questions, a smile will suffice just fine.

For those who are concerned, the parents’ house is not the acceptable place to get drunk on beer or midnight rendezvous. Taking a stroll at a park or small talk over coffee or tea is common in the beginning stages of courtship. Keep in mind, however, that overt public displays of affection are generally frowned upon.
