For driving expats and foreigners who just moved to Saigon, choosing the right car brand is definitely important, and it might not be the same as the ones in your country. Several companies such as Ford, Honda and Toyota produce (assemble) cars in Vietnam. This negates some import tariffs, which are otherwise sky high, despite some recent decreases. Financing is also available with each dealer offering different conditions and rates. Most dealers loan up to 70% of a car’s value and offer 12 to 60 month payment plans, which is in line with most Western countries. The average interest rate for financing is 9% but will vary depending on how much you want to initially put down and what assets you have. Loans for foreigners are difficult to impossible.
