If you look around the streets of Saigon, you’ll notice that most people, especially expats take motorcycles instead of public transportation like buses but there are benefits to taking local buses around HCMC, especially if you cannot be fussed to deal with the traffic and also appreciate gliding around the city in air-conditioned comfort. Most major streets can be accessed via a bus line and they are also very cheap at VND5,000 for a short trip in town. The most you will pay is VND8,000-10,000 depending on where you’re heading which means that you save money on transport compared to taking taxis.

At present, approximately 3,000 buses ply HCMC’s streets. According to the Department of Transport, buses will continue to be the dominant means of public transportation. There are plans to increase route frequency, add electronic ticketing and include modern transfer stations and bus stops in the near future.
