Pedestrians can be easy targets for motorbike thieves in Saigon, so be aware of your surroundings, most especially if your a foreigner or an expat as these are more common targets. Presence of mind is most necessary. Don’t flash your valuables and make sure you secure your belongings. Texting or calling while walking is not advised. Another safety tip is to keep your bag away from the street and traffic. Be aware of your surroundings and if you have to take out your cell phone on the street, find a corner or shop and stop for a while. It’s also best to duck or stand near a wall if you need to use your phone on the street and you can’t seem to find a place to stop. Remember that motorbikes often ride on the sidewalks, and someone can quickly swipe your cellphone from your hand if you’re not careful. Perhaps this sounds mildly paranoid, but theft is a daily occurrence and all it takes is one bag or phone snatch to really ruin your day.
