You can reach the biggest island in the bay by public ferry, but it is geared to locals and thus it is advisable to go with an organized tour. Hon Tre Island (translated to Bamboo Island) remained untouched until 2004. Just a few fishing huts dotted the coastline back then. Now, things are different and since the island got connected to the mainlands of Nha Trang with a system of cable cars, ferries and speedboats, it’s easy to access for tourists.
Vinpearl Land Hon Tre
The island is home to Vinpearl Land, impossible to miss with its imposing Hollywood-like sign on the island, facing the city. It is a massive entertainment, accommodation and tourism complex that started as the 5-star Sofitel Vinpearl Resort and Spa and got extended more and more.
Vinpearl attractions include a theme park, musical fountain, water park and aquarium as well as numerous restaurants.
Getting to Hon Tre
You have a choice of four transport methods to get to the largest island off the coast of Nha Trang. The world’s longest over-water cable car takes you there in about 12 minutes.
The cable car runs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Friday to Saturday and an all-inclusive ticket is VND 300,000.
A speedboat takes seven minutes, a taxi canoe five minutes. The ferry, which runs every 30 minutes, is probably the cheapest option. But it takes 20 minutes.
After booking the service, just ask your local tour desk operator for the directions to the appropriate harbor.
Eating, Shopping and Drinking
The more tourism got developed on Hon Tre Island, the more shops, restaurants and bars popped up to welcome guests. Just check out the surroundings of the hotels, lobby lounges and souvenir shops.
