Mai Chau Ecolodge

For anyone with a taste for tranquility, Mai Chau Ecolodge is an ideal getaway. Secluded beneath a fringe of deep green mountains, this beautiful valley has become famous as a haven from the stresses of life.

Rooms and Amenities

The Ecolodge offers a range of 21 bungalows to its guests, and each is made of entirely natural resources from the local area. Being a pioneer of Vietnam’s ecotourism sector, there is a deliberate focus at Ecolodge on locally sourced and natural materials. Palm-thatched roofs, lovely bamboo furniture and even a bathtub crafted entirely from Jackfruit wood! Mai Chau Ecolodge doesn’t just take ecotourism seriously, it seems to have molded it into a craft.

Breath in the fresh air as you enter your room and soak it all in. The red tiled floor is gently cool on your toes, and as you walk past your soft bamboo bed to the balcony, relish the silence of your private haven. No motorbikes, no horns, no people chatter.

Every room offers the usual ensuite complete with hair dryer, bathrobes and slippers, and every bathroom is beautifully crafted from forest bamboo. The bathtubs are huge! As are the rooms, with their tasteful furniture and authentic decor, which are inspired as much by their location as by the culture of the local people. We would suggest packing mosquito repellent as the balconies can be lethal in the evening, but every bed comes with its own netting which keeps you safe and itch free in a cosy night time environment.

Accommodation at the Mai Chau Ecolodge is clean and quiet. You can expect a private balcony and garden with your bungalow, and we suggest sipping tea or a coffee from the range provided as you lay back on one of the deckchairs.

Service

Guests check-in to the Ecolodge at 2:00 p.m. and check-out at 12:00 p.m. Mai Chau is home to three ethnic groups - the White Thai, the H’mong and the Dzao, and all the staff at the Ecolodge are from the local area, mainly of White Thai ethnicity. As a haven for ecotourism and local culture, one of the best features of the Mai Chau Ecolodge is how it aims to benefit local people. All staff members receive training in English and hospitality, and in this way the lodge, while a luxury getaway for its guests, gives back to the Mai Chau community.

Traditional costumes bring an authentic air to the smiling Ecolodge staff, and their gentle manners add to the deep, relaxing ambience of the refuge. Staff speak English and, though many are still learning the language, they are very helpful and efficient.

Dining

Meals at the Mai Chau Ecolodge are fresh and nutritious, and prepared from local ingredients. The Ecolodge restaurant provides a plethora of Vietnamese and White Thai dishes, with herbs and mouthwatering salads from their own gardens. The meals are as authentic as you can get. The Ecolodge employs the White Thai ethnic minority to prepare and serve your food, and the pride they feel for their culture really shows in the way they offer it to you.

You can book a la carte or a package with set meals depending on your choice, and be sure to let the hotel know any dietary requirements or preferences in advance. Breakfast is a buffet and while the range isn’t huge the food is fresh and tasty. Restaurant staff dress in traditional White Thai clothing.

Room service is available, but the rustic stilt house restaurant would be a shame to miss! A two story building built in traditional White Thai style, maybe the best feature of the Ecolodge restaurant is the view. Looking over the rice paddies and wild rolling highlands of this serene valley with a platter of delicious White Thai delicacies, an evening at the Ecolodge restaurant is more like a Mai Chau immersion than a daily meal.

Facilities

As a vacation destination we would recommend Mai Chau Ecolodge for its facilities alone. As a lover of all things comfortable, the first thing we look for in a getaway destination is a warm, beautiful pool, and a close second is the spa.

The Ecolodge offers a lagoon-style pool complete with poolside bar and comfy deckchairs. The lodge also has an atmospheric massage center with incredible panoramic views and a range of luxurious services.

The Ecolodge also offers a private secluded garden for each of its 19 bungalows, wi-fi for all rooms and public areas, a free parking area, room service, a daily turndown service, a top notch laundry service and a bright, welcoming lobby on the base of their two-story White Thai restaurant. When you arrive you are welcomed with smiles and guided to your private space in the resort. Your own private haven in Mai Chau’s top eco-friendly refuge.

The lodge also provides free bicycles for exploring Mai Chau, and offers sightseeing and tour guides for its guests. Mai Chau Ecolodge is evidently very proud of its location and celebrates local culture, the exquisite landscape and the local sites with a variety of opportunities in the local area. Guests can visit the children of ethnic minorities in their local schools - for so many of these kids the Ecolodge is their only link to the globalized world, and visiting their schools not only makes them giggle but provides them with invaluable exposure to other cultures, languages and ways of life.

We would also recommend helping out the local farmers as a great way to understand rural life in Northwestern Vietnam, and a once in a life time opportunity to get involved.

What People Say

Tripadvisor is of a mixed opinion about Mai Chau Ecolodge, but the overwhelming consensus across 77 reviews is that the lodge’s four stars are very much deserved. The lodge has tripadvisor a rating of 4 ½ bubbles.

Many reviews note the staff’s friendly and hardworking attitude, but comment on their lack of English. Reviews have also commented on the upkeep of the pool though most people thought it clean, clear and beautiful, and the poolside bar is a consistent hit.

Reviews call the beds soft, the rooms’ furniture beautiful but a little uncomfortable, the service friendly and attentive but requiring greater language skills, and the tours and cycling fun and informative.

The most popular aspect of Mai Chau Ecolodge is its incredible surroundings! Mai Chau itself is unavoidably beautiful, and guests to the lodge are consistently blown away by its incredible views, clean air and serene mountain scenery. We can totally understand why.
