Top 6 Late Night Food Options in Saigon

food - Saigon/HCMC: May 23, 2014

Whenever travellers think of nightlife or street food at night, they usually think of the Pham Ngu Lao area, the ‘backpacker’s street’. But if you want to enjoy really good food in Saigon, you have to go out of that ‘safe area’ and in some cases discover other districts. The easiest way is to ask locals for recommendations. They will be only too happy to share their opinions.

Below are our hand-picked top four shops for late-evening street food.

1. Hang Xanh’s Congee

Hang Xanh’s Congee

For the Vietnamese palate, the best food to have at night is congee (rice porridge), and one of the best shops is Hang Xanh which gets really crowded after 10 p.m.. The congee here has a very nice aroma with pineapple leaves used as herbs. This shop is famous for its side dishes, too: pickled cabbage, salted duck egg, pepper braised pork etc. The price is remarkably reasonable, from VND15,000 to VND25,000 per dish.

Ask your local friends to take you there, as it is not very easy to find the shop for the first time, especially if you cannot read Vietnamese.

Address: Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street, Binh Thanh District.
Open: 5pm – 2am

2. Pho Ha

Pho Ha

Everyone coming to Vietnam knows pho, “the soup that built a nation”. This national dish can be consumed at any time of the day, and yes, it’s perfect for night dining. Pho Ha on Hai Trieu street is a popular shop that many Vietnamese favour in the late evening.

Pho Ha is famous for a number of dishes using chicken as the main ingredient. Besides pho, it also has a signature sticky rice dish called crispy fried sticky rice with pork floss, a unique combination of North and South cuisine.

Address: 31 Hai Trieu, District 1
Open: 4pm – 5am

3. Green Wall Geylang’s Frog Soup

Green Wall Geylang’s Frog Soup

Frog soup is an iconic dish in Singapore that has been gaining huge popularity in Saigon. The best shop in the centre of the city is Greylang Green Wall on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, just a few steps away from Pham Ngu Lao street.

Frog soup and dim sum are the specialities here, although it also does a fantastically fatty, milky steamed bun which is a killer combination with prawn dumpling.

Address: 134 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, District 1
Open: 10am – 3am

4. Huyen Broken Rice

Huyen Broken Rice

Saigonese just lo-o-ove Broken rice late at night. This shop on Dinh Tien Hoang street is nicknamed ‘ghost shop’ because it opens at 6pm but only gets crowded after midnight, when most of the city is already sleeping like a log. The shop’s customers are from all classes, from the labourers who work night shift to the rich businesspeople who use iPhones and drive branded cars.

Huyen broken rice is a street-food vendor but the quality is top notch, and prices are not that cheap compared to other street-food places. But it is definitely a must-try on a night-food tour of Saigon.

Address: 95 Dinh Tien Hoang, Binh Thanh District
Open: 6pm – 4am

5. Cafe Zoom

Serving Breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee and drinks, this well known backpacker hotspot is a late-night food lover’s haven, full of rich, hot international cuisine. Standout items include homemade sausages, delicious nachos with locally made cornmeal tortillas, fresh salsa, fresh Italian panini and the typical Vietnamese staples. There aren’t a huge range of options, this spot is nonetheless a great oasis for a something delicious in the middle of the day or night. Beer, wine and spirits are also served, and we would suggest tucking-in to the famous Zoon Burger.

Address: 169A De Tham, District 1
Open: 7am – 2am

6. Heritage Coffee & Clothes

This cafe and clothing shop is the ideal spot for a midnight drink in the soft yellow glow of vintage fairy lights. Serving rich coffee and drinks, Heritage is known as much for its beverages as for its dated, stylish decor and large, friendly bulldogs. The staff play Vietnamese oldies, and have lined the cafe with all variety of antiques from typewriters to gnarled old couches. Many customers choose to sit out on the street in front of the cafe and enjoy the night air, whilst others enjoy the dim, peaceful ambience of the cafe’s interior. If you want to go out in the evening but prefer to be quiet and a little bit private, this is the late night location for you.
