The White House

food - Saigon/HCMC: Nov. 1, 2016

This beautiful old style mansion is one of the most impressive spaces in District 2 in which to drink, chill-out and play pool.

The White House Bar & Restaurant is the newest addition to the District 2 bar and restaurant scene. Having held its highly successful opening party in September, this is becoming a hot favourite among the eclectic expat community in one of Ho Chi Minh City’s most fashionable areas. It is very much a bar first, but an ever evolving menu is also becoming more advanced and appealing. The White House aims to bridge the gap between a sports bar and local pub. It has already become a firm favourite with pool players and has three teams entered into the Saigon Pool League. This really is an ideal location to hold family gatherings, business events and group meetings. At the same time, it’s also a great place to hang out.

This is where The White House has been clever. Built over three magnificent floors, it has different ambiences. With jokey references to all things presidential, the ground floor is very much a pub. A bar near the centre serves customers from two sides. To the rear, a full size pool table sits in front of a striking mural of Washington DC by night. The first floor is a quiet, casual, no smoking lounge with soft red arm chairs; ideal for meetings. The top floor is quite simply the best pub pool room in the city. Beautifully laid out, it has two championship standard tables, a couple of electronic dart boards and a huge screen showing top sporting events. Outside there is a swimming pool, a barbecue area and a gazebo. This is a superb, flexible venue for any type of private function.

The service is homely and welcoming. This is fast becoming a place where everybody knows your name. For canned and bottled beer lovers, every regular gets their own personalised beer holder. The staff works incredibly hard; delivering drinks quickly over three storeys is never easy, but they achieve it with a smile. As with all brand new venues, they sometimes get it wrong, but the management are doing this right. The White House is growing organically and the members of staff are growing with it.

Food & Drink

Drink takes the priority here with a newly installed glycol system delivering cold craft beers to thirsty customers. Craft beers already on tap are TeTe White Craft Beer, LAC’s Devil’s Lake IPA, Fuzzy Logic Pale Ale, and Platinum Pale Ale and Golden Ale. Phat Rooster and Winking Seal are coming soon as well. A good selection of bottled beers, a well stocked spirit shelf and a good selection of wines are carried.

The menu is all about pub snacks; the type of food you can enjoy whilst knocking pool balls around or watching the latest Premier League football match. The meatballs are a favourite as are the range of pies. Warming bowls of chilli served with bread or rice, baked potatoes, chicken wraps and sausage rolls are also available. Prices range from VND45,000 up to VND290,000 for a plate of either cold cuts or cheese to serve two. This is not an expensive place by any stretch.

What Can Be Improved

If anything, the middle floor is underused. It’s a nice space but people tend to gravitate to either the ground or top floors. It is possible that this could grow or change with time.

What People Say

The White House has not been open long enough to get reviews on TripAdvisor, but word of mouth reviews have been extremely positive. In fact the whole growth of the bar has been through word of mouth, the best reviews a venue can get.
