Cà Phê Cô Ba: a Café for Lovers of Vintage Saigon and Great Coffee

Savour traditional Vietnamese coffee beverages and tea, light-bites and desserts at Saigon’s latest talk of the town, Cà Phê Cô Ba. Spanning the second floor of a beautiful heritage building at 2 Dong Khoi Street in District 1, the café’s vintage wooden interior combines southeast Asian tones with a touch of French colonial nuances.

Cà Phê Cô Ba’s architecture and comfortable cushioned seats create a splendid environment for spending time with friends and family while immersing yourself in the vintage allure of pre-1975 Saigon.

A Central Location with Classic Charm

A great escape from Ho Chi Minh City’s fervent and relentless sunshine, the café is a short stroll away from Nguyen Hue walking street and Ho Chi Minh City Hall. Cà Phê Cô Ba’s ultimate central location is also ideal for tourists and locals to rejuvenate and loosen up tired feet over a cup of hot or cold Vietnamese coffee.

Plenty of eye candy surrounds guests when seated. The owner of Cà Phê Cô Ba is a passionate collector of antiques and her dazzling display of aged treasures include working vintage typewriters, telephones, posters and forgotten art pieces.

Beverages and More

Cà Phê Cô Ba’s set tea is amongst one of the most popular menu items. Guests may select a tea from choices including black tea, green tea and numerous English favourites while sinking their teeth into candied lotus seeds, ginger and buttery Danish-style cookies.

For a more filling or indulgent snack, Cà Phê Cô Ba’s food menu offers more than five types of banh mi (Vietnamese baguette sandwiches). Choose from fillings such as ‘sunny-side-up’ eggs, ham with pâté or barbecued meatballs with lemongrass and savoury sauce. Guests who do not fancy sandwiches may opt for other popular menu items such as Cô Ba’s traditional English breakfast, a classic beef pho or fragrant flavoured rice with a pan-fried chicken leg. For a unique local experience, diners may also opt to sample Cà Phê Cô Ba’s signature marinated rice paper salad with dried beef jerky, which is highly popular with local guests.

Cà Phê Cô Ba’s beverage menu is refreshing and creative at the same time. No matter their preference, guests will have no trouble finding something to enjoy over deep conversations.

Apart from Vietnamese coffee classics such as ca phe nong and ca phe sua da, the café’s iced coconut and calamansi juice is an addictive, non-alcoholic thirst-quencher while the Hanoi-style iced black tea with peaches or lychee is a favourite amongst youngsters.

Ice-blended coffee, coconut, green tea, chocolate and cookie freezes are a match made in heaven with the local sweltering weather. Italian-style coffee is also available for guests who prefer cappuccino, latte or americano. For the health conscious, choose from a wide range of fresh fruit juices such as pineapple and watermelon. Also, be sure to try Cà Phê Cô Ba’s asian-style herbal sweet teas innovatively served with a spoonful of chia seeds for an added nutritional boost.

The café also features a semi-outdoor balcony area for smokers to take a breather and for guests who enjoy their drinks and food al fresco style.

What City Pass Guide says

The interior of the café is charming and vintage. Plenty of softened, natural light enters the air-conditioned interior. One of the best things about the café is the comfortable seating. Large armchairs and sofas are hard to find in most cafés but at Cà Phê Cô Ba customers can actually sit down and get cosy.

Most customers spotted were Saigonese or local Vietnamese tourists, a sure indicator that the food and drinks are reasonably priced and of good quality. All these factors combined with the café’s friendly opening hours from 7:30 am to 10:30 pm makes Cà Phê Cô Ba more comfortable and convenient than the majority of other common chain cafés on Dong Khoi and Nguyen Hue street.

Mojo Café

Mojo Café is nestled under and owned by the Sheraton Saigon Hotel & Towers. It sits on Dong Khoi and has an impressive frontage that can be opened fully when weather permits.

The Sheraton Hotel in turn is managed by the Starwood Hotels & Resorts who have a portfolio of 1300 hotels around the world. They are able to draw on their vast resources and experience to present a menu here that is as one would expect, world class. Mojo Café presents a superb addition to the Ho Chi Minh City dining scene.

Ambience

The concept is clever. They open from very early morning until late at night and therefore need a different ambience and menu for each part of the day. In the morning it’s the ideal place to drop in for a coffee and a croissant, whilst taking in the morning papers. By day time the menu becomes more that of a bistro café and people come to enjoy a lunch of maybe a sandwich and one of the signature smoothies, for which Mojo is fast becoming recognised. In the evening this is a classy restaurant offering superb food from Asia and beyond. The menu has a strong Korean influence and is both authentic and delicious. They also specialise in cakes to go, so for that special occasion in your life, this is the place to contact.

Mojo Café targets Saigon professionals and whilst 20% of the trade is from hotel customers, it is the local demographic that is making up the bulk of their trade. Many Vietnamese celebrities drop in here, it is one of the venues in town in which to see and be seen. The menu changes about every 6 months in order to keep it fresh and they have monthly specials. October was based around the German Oktoberfest activities and November is “Modern Thai”.

Service

As you would expect the staff is well trained and up to the standards one would expect from a 5 star hotel. They are polite and helpful without being overbearing.

Food & Drink

And what of the food, well I have to report that it is spectacular. Most of the ingredients are imported from France and other countries. The marvelous chocolate comes from Belgium as you would expect. We tried three of the main course offerings.

Steak Sandwich (VND330,000++) This comes with a choice of cheddar or Blue cheese. I had it with the cheddar and the blend of quality beef, delicious bacon and melted cheese on super fresh French bread was mouth-watering. It was well presented and perfectly cooked.

Korean Style Beef Ribs (VND409,000++) These were exceptional. The presentation immediately prepares one for the delights that are to follow upon tasting. The beef was so subtly flavored with sesame oil and spices, it comes with fabulous Kimchi as one would hope, a clear soup, some delicious beans and rice. This was truly wonderful.

Mojo own noodle soup. (VND260,000++) Don’t be fooled, this is a complete meal in itself. It is packed with wholesome vegetables, noodles, wontons, Choy Sum, Chilli Satay and seafood. It’s a delicious tasty soup, just spiced enough to give it a slight edge without overpowering any of the many flavours.

We rounded off with delicious Tiramisu and the best blueberry cheesecake imaginable. This was heaven on a plate. A good strong double shot of superb Espresso (VND 100,000++) and the meal concluded. This is an amazing addition to the Ho Chi Minh café list.

What could be Improved

It genuinely is difficult to think of anything without sounding churlish. This really is an exceptional cafe in the best part of town. I suppose they could look at the pricing policy, though I expect it has to pay for itself as part of the Sheraton Saigon. That is though the only gripe I can think of. It wouldn’t put me off, but maybe some.

What People Say

TripAdvisor reviews are for the main part completely positive, which doesn’t surprise me. A few criticized the pricing policies of the cafe, though I guess that as it is part of the Sheraton, you have to pay for what you get. Dong Khoi is the most expensive part of town and that too comes at a premium.
