Saigoneers have a broad choice of rooftop bars, so another one has to be phenomenal to keep up with the rest. This is certainly the case for SOHY Bar & Restaurant, perched high above Vietnam’s glistening city on the 25th floor of the Centec Tower on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. This restaurant and lounge has raised the bar for both the quality of service and the food and drinks.
Perhaps the most striking feature of SOHY is its ultra-cool but also elegant and calming ambience. Designed by the Japanese design team Super Potato, the general concept for SOHY is “futuristic beach resort”. This idea is taken to fun and interesting places.
When you step out of the elevator, look to your left and see the floor-to-ceiling LED screen, which plays hip video clips like you’ve just stepped into a Los Angeles nightclub. Turn to your right, and you’ll be met by a beautiful and smiling hostess, waiting to help you find your seat.
Depending on where you want to go, you’ll be led to different parts of this two-storey entertainment emporium, which can comfortably seat 450 people. If you want an elegant dinner, go upstairs to the Star Dining Lounge, where you’ll enjoy a set menu with the chef’s choice specialities. It’s low-lit and romantic, and has the atmosphere of a fine-dining restaurant.
If you’re more in the mood for a cigar and a brandy, check the zero-gravity cigar room that’s both futuristic and traditionally masculine—think glass-panelled walls mixed with exposed wood furnishing and leather sofas.
If a drink and tapas in the open air is more for you, head over to the sky lounge with covered seating and an outdoor terrace, all with a glorious view of District 1’s glittering skyline. On the very top of the bar is a champagne garden, reserved for special events and ideal for private parties or company get-togethers.
Don’t come here just for the amazing views and decor: the food and drinks are also top notch. At the Star Dining Room, it’s all about the set menu. For VND680,000, this four-course spread is a great deal when you compare it to the à la carte menu prices. For example, three raw Nha Trang oysters served with steeped onion oil, quail eggs and caviar (VND245,000++ à la carte); shrimp and black truffle wonton soup (VND250,000++ à la carte); marinated French duck breast with orange ginger sauce (VND670,000++ à la carte); and the coconut cheesecake for dessert (VND145,000++ à la carte). Eating here, I saved a cool VND630,000, before taxes, and enjoyed every bite of it. Do note, though, that the chefs change the menu daily to reflect what’s freshest.
If you’d rather have a few plates to share at the Sky Lounge below, the menu has plenty of options for culinary sharing. Might I suggest the cold cuts and cheese board (VND385,000++) or even just the crispy spiced cashews (VND85,000++)?
SOHY’s drinks menu offers a great selection of champagne, seven varieties of wine, a wide selection of signature cocktails, and a good number of classic choices. The cocktails range from VND95,000 to VND300,000, although all the signature cocktails come in at VND220,000.
You’ll find pages upon pages of aperitifs, liqueurs, single malt scotch, cognac, Japanese whisky, blended malt, Irish whiskey, bourbon, rum, gin, tequila and vodka. Yeah, SOHY is serious about the drinks.
Thanks to the cigar lounge, the whisky options abound. Plus, you can pair that glass of Glenmorangie 25 (VND380,000++) with a hand-rolled cigar from the well-stocked humidor.
The different levels and sections of SOHY guarantee that a wide variety of people can come for a good night.
Have a client or want to network with the boys? Take them to the cigar lounge. Have an important date or you’re celebrating a birthday or anniversary? Head to the Star Dining Room for a candlelit dinner. If you’re looking for a good place to take friends on the weekends, the outdoor terrace is perfect, with lounge seating and energetic music playing late into the night. And if you just want a drink after work, sit down with a cocktail and watch the sun set between Saigon’s high rises.
SOHY attracts a wealthy clientele, and the vast majority seems incredibly pleased. Of its six Google ratings, it scores a perfect 5 stars, and on TripAdvisor, it gets a 4.0 with 30 reviews. Some people complain about the prices of the drinks, but most feel that the ambience and level of service make up for this.
While it’s not a place to frequent every night (unless your budget allows for it), SOHY is a great place to go when you want to feel fabulous in Saigon. Be sure to check its Facebook page, as SOHY regularly posts events and hosts a variety of themed functions. Also, check the promotions and time your visit to grab a deal.
SOHY has a variety of specials throughout the week, but perhaps the best one happens on Mondays and Tuesdays: if you check in to SOHY on your social media pages, you get free-flow signature cocktails!
