The Fast Track to Vung Tau

Daily News - Saigon/HCMC: Feb. 14, 2017

Boats are one of Vietnam’s most ancient means of transport. They are also its future means of transport. When Saigon’s streets are packed, what better way to escape the crowds than using the numerous waterways that cut through town? It’s faster and often a much more enjoyable experience. Bangkok sets a good example with its various water taxis and ferries.

After the problems hydrofoil services between Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau have experienced in the last few years, including a month-long ban of all shuttle providers in Ho Chi Minh City’s rivers, only Greenlines DP remains today to offer speed boat shuttles between Saigon’s metropole and the seaside city. The Petro Pacific Tourism Corporation will become the second company currently offering a high-speed shuttle service to Vung Tau, which will start 1st March 2017.

Petro Pacific’s speed boat will make 8 to 10 round trips, each way lasting around an hour and a half, between Vung Tau and Saigon per day (see the timetable above). The shuttle boat, which has a capacity of 44 passengers, will operate between HCMC’s Nha Rong Port in 5 Nguyen Tat Thanh (District 4) and Vung Tau’s Cau Da Port – just a five minute taxi ride from Vung Tau’s city centre! Tickets will cost VND 200,000 on weekdays and VND 250,000 on weekends.

According to their website, Petro Pacific Tourism has big plans for the project: “Our mission and vision in the near future is to increase the number of travellers by boat between the two destinations as well as bring the fleet size to 5 high-capacity speed boats.”

Other means of transport to go to Vung Tau include private cars and buses, the former being considerably more expensive for groups of less than five people (around VND 1,000,000 per way) and both taking about half an hour to an hour and a half longer to reach the destination.

Judging by the looks of promotional pictures, you’ll have all the comfort you need on the new speed boats: Wi-Fi, AirCon, a restroom, a smoking area and free mineral water are all available on board. And you’ll most certainly be more conveniently seated than in most buses available!
