Can Gio is recognized as a biosphere reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Over half the area of Can Gio National Park is comprised of saltwater forest. Once, the area was a remote fishermen's hangout. Today it is a UNESCO site that attracts many people from Ho Chi Minh City and across the world. There are a number of Saigon tour companies offering excursions to the area. At peak times, the park welcomes between 2,000 and 6,000 visitors a day.
