New World Saigon Hotel

Opening its lavish doors in 1994, New World Saigon Hotel has been one of Ho Chi Minh City's key players in the hostpitality scene for over 20 years.

Since its inception, New World Saigon has endeavored to accommodate client expectations, and has blossomed into a business-oriented hotel with a robust set of leisure activities (such as the famous Saigon Soul pool party) and brainstorming grounds to reinvigorate the stressed Asian and Western executives that occupy over half its 533 spacious rooms.

Having celebrated its 20th anniversary in October 2014, the hotel is a landmark in Saigon. The lobby is grandiose, with a picturesque floor-to-ceiling window view of the 23/9 Park from the lobby’s Parkview restaurant. While the rooms are technologically quaint – there’s only one modern outlet for international plugs – adapters are aplenty and hotel associates are more than willing to provide.

New World Saigon Hotel

Guests will be delighted to find quality amenities, including 5-star standards such as a collection of toiletries, two water bottles per bathroom, tea and instant coffee, complimentary mineral water and local fruit for non-suite rooms, access to an iron and an ironing board, a safety deposit box, robes and yukatas, shoe cleaning supplies and various work desk accessories. A jar of Vietnamese bath salts sits at every bathtub and the suite rooms contain high-end Elemis products.

The rooms and suites are meticulously clean, despite their simple colors and passé art. They come in three general varieties: guestrooms, amenity-packed Residence Club rooms and suites.

New World Saigon Hotel is located in a key central location, with quick access to many popular sites:

The hotel staff is more than willing to address a complaint, chase down a taxi, make a sound recommendation, or simply ensure your stay is up to standards. If you find your bed is too soft we found them insatiable sleep magnets, but many prefer their mattresses harder), dial 0 and they’ll bring a board to place under your mattress free of charge. Lost a yukata in the midst of the pool area? They’ll send someone to find it in the morning and inform the front desk to avoid the charge.

Likewise for room noise. While most Saigoneers grew up with traffic blaring through their windows, the majority of international guests may not be as passive about the 7 a.m. rush of motorbikes and lumbering cars. Hotel employees are more than willing to recommend a quieter room (smoking or nonsmoking) in a more unobtrusive wing, even before the guest has checked in, or switch rooms for a current guest.

New World Saigon Hotel ensures the international businessmen and women that frequent the hotel will be well equipped. Their meeting rooms, conference rooms and business center, as well as their tension-releasing leisure facilities all have the business professional in mind.

Up to 350 attendees can be accommodated per function. Three large conference rooms with funky Oriental names come fortified with speakers, PA systems, DVD players, light controls, podiums, stages, Wi-Fi and wired internet, and projectors. Smaller multi-function meeting rooms line the first and 10th floors.

The hotel’s business center allows up to 20 free photocopies, and includes computer access, as well as postal, secretarial and translation services. Business guests should feel right at home (or work).

Those in the industry (ahem) will tell you a hotel is only as good as its restaurant(s). Luckily for New World Saigon, their Parkview and Dynasty restaurants are delectable treats for the palate.

Spanning 20 years of dining, both hotel eateries have garnered a reputation over the years. Parkview excels in their Western-style buffets and all-you-can-eat fresh seafood, and Dynasty’s authentic Chinese cuisine includes Saigon staples such as their Beijing duck and suckling pig.

The hotel’s signature service permeates their restaurant teams as well. The main servers and managers at Dynasty, New World’s Chinese restaurant, have comprehensive knowledge of their dishes, including individual ingredients, wine and sauce pairings and other tidbits. They enthusiastically divulge details with the air of gourmands and are genuinely excited to talk about the food they serve.

Citypassguide.com recommends Saturday lunches at Dynasty for dim sum, the Chinese equivalent of afternoon tea time. Unlimited dim sum is served at VND399,000++ per person, excluding 6% service charge and 10% VAT.

Dynasty’s a la carte menu is a great dinner choice any day of the week. With exceptional suckling pig, a variety of Chinese teas, addictive rice dishes and delectable desserts — this restaurant is a must if you’re staying the night at the hotel. For a more decorous experience, we suggest guests sit further-in in the restaurant, where displays of traditional figurines and the restaurant’s globe-shaped bottles of shaoxing (Chinese rice wine) sit on oriental wood shelves, with a feng-shui metal display of curving dragons and latticed vegetation line the far end.

For breakfast and weekday lunch, a stopover at Parkview is a must. Besides the admirable view, the restaurant’s buffet is loaded with freshly cooked seafood and Western-style dishes that are, for the most part, a grade above the typical higher-end buffet offerings. City Pass highly recommends giving the breakfast and lunch buffets a taste, as there is always something to appease the international palate. The unlimited lobster dinner buffets on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays are a must as well.

All desserts served in the hotel are under supervision of the master pastry chef. Ingredients are locally purchased and carefully inspected before put to use for the Saigon Bakery as well the dessert options throughout the hotel.

City Pass fell in love with the layered Pandan cake, as well as the Saigon Cake, which is a first in Ho Chi Minh City, utilizing local ingredients with a famous recipe from the Philippines to create a layered wafer cake that’s truly scrumptious.

Those situated on the 10th through 14th floors gain access to the Residence Club, an exclusive lounge area with unlimited drinks and hors d'oeuvre from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., along with all day access to complementary coffee and tea, free buffet breakfast and private check-in and check-out. An outdoor seating area on the terrace gives a sweeping aerial view of Saigon and is great for smoking and brainstorming sessions. With the businessmen and women in mind, access to the floor’s meeting room, with comfortable executive chairs and projector, is granted gratis for an hour.

… And relax. But just for a bit. The majority of New World Saigon Hotel’s business guests are only granted a few moments to spare before they are whisked back to work. So to better make those moments count, New World Saigon Hotel has a first floor recreation area that is more akin to a sea-side resort than something in the middle of a noisy metropolis. Come down for a cool dip in the lake-shaped pool area, stroll through the garden area that stretches across the hotel grounds area and practice your lobs and backhands in the closed tennis court.

The Spa at New World Saigon Hotel

For in-house guests, there is a free gym, sauna and steam room. A high-end spa experience at The Spa includes body scrubs, full-body massages, facials and delicious juices and teas to melt the most wound up shoulders. Check out the link in this paragraph for a comprehensive overview of City Pass’s honest assessment of The Spa.

Staying on Saturday? The Saigon Soul Party is famous for its attractive attendees and great DJs, and is the most popular pool party in the city. Hotel guests get in free, while attendees pay an entrance fee of VND150,000 (and the same amount for the deposit), and locker and towel fees totaling VND100,000.

What did City Pass love? What did not meet expectations? Find out below:

  • Excellent service from the hotel staff – they are truly empathetic
  • Clean rooms and respectful housekeepers
  • 5-star facilities, including first-rate spa and restaurants
  • Beautiful pool and garden area for some resort-style leisure
  • Business amenities appease even the most demanding executives
  • The Residence Club floor feels like a true VIP experience
  • Free entrance to the Saigon Soul Pool Party
  • Literally in the middle of everything you’d want to see in Saigon
  • Dated plugs in the rooms – luckily the staff has adapters on hand
  • Classic décor
  • No Jacuzzi for guys

City Pass Certified? Most certainly. The truly central location and wonderful facilities are well worth the price of admission.
