If you are looking for new ways to enjoy Vietnamese food in Hanoi, you have come to the right place. MAD Society – “MAD” as in “Modern Asian Dining” – stays true to its name and delivers a creative fusion menu for the adventurous diner.
Located on the fourth floor of the Somerset West Point hotel in Tay Ho District, MAD Society is a stunning place. The moment you walk in, you will be impressed by the spacious dining hall with ample natural light streaming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Take another moment to appreciate the outdoor pool reflecting the calming light.
All of this is complemented by a bar carrying around 200 types of whisky. This is connected to an outdoor tiki bar by the pool, offering Polynesian-style rum cocktails. MAD Society is a place for people to enjoy not only the food, but also the social vibe of the bar and a dining concept that is rare in Hanoi.
The indoor space is decorated to recreate the atmosphere of a1930s art deco style salon. It takes you back to a different place in time, an era when the intellects, artists, and socialites gathered to a salon for a night of long conversations. Dining in such a pleasant and elegant setting feels like a privilege and a celebration of history and culture.
At MAD Society, you will be able to experience the tastes of different cultures in one plate. Different spices and sauces from all around Asia are used to play around familiar dishes and deliver new flavors. For example, the Ssam Bar presents a creative take on the Korean-style pork wraps, using char siu pork and served with three different choices of sauce: chili mayo, hoisin sauce, and gochujang (red chili paste).
The restaurant has been featured in CNN Travel for its novel presentation of traditional Hanoian food like phở, bún chả, and chả cá. The translation of modern Vietnamese food is well captured in its signature dishes, like the phoritto (rice noodles and beef wrapped in tortillas, similar to the Mexican burrito) and chaca taco (fish taco, but with Vietnamese turmeric and galangal).
Set apart from the common food scene in Hanoi—which emphasizes sticking to traditions and specific, must-try dishes—at MAD Society, it’s really about being adventurous and trying new things. Travelers and local youths come here to experience unfamiliar tastes, something different from their everyday life in the capital city.
As many more young Vietnamese enjoy wine these days, the restaurant’s Asian tapas menu, complete with wine pairings, is a bonus.
Other favorite dishes selected by MAD Society’s customers include starters like sriracha salmon, Ninh Binh rice crackers with savory seafood pot and mentaiko cream udon, and for main course, grilled steak with kimchi butter and grilled chicken with yuzu marmalade. To satisfy your sweet tooth, there’s the good old mango sticky rice with a twist of coconut ice cream.
The unique menu is mainly based on Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese and Thai flavors. These are the most internationally recognized Asian flavors that appeal to a wide range of adventurers. Exploring the vast array of flavors enables MAD Society to demystify and share the versatility of different condiments and cooking ingredients that complement and enhance the pleasure of a meal.
With an new incoming head chef, MAD Society will introduce more sophisticated yet approachable unique seasonal additions to the menu, such as the beef rossini with wasabi mashed potatoes.
To enjoy the bar and dining experience to the fullest, happy hour occurs daily from 5 to 8 p.m. On Friday nights, there’s live jazz from 8 to 10 p.m. and what’s more, the ladies get a free cocktail. Professional service from the friendly, English-speaking staff will ensure an enjoyable evening for you and your guests.
