Getting around Ho Chi Minh City can be a scary proposition at first. Bicycles are quite common. Of course in the old days, there were literally millions of them but they have been superseded by motorbikes these days. However, for those who are not scared of the insane traffic situtation it can be a pleasant way of travelling. Once one gets out of D1 and drives to the more modern areas of D2 and D7, it really is quite bicycle friendly. If you look to rent a bicycle, there are rental places around the backpacker areas of the city, particularly on Bui Vien street.
