According to VNExpress, the cable, which snapped last Tuesday afternoon about 125 kilometres off the coast of Da Nang, should be fully restored by July 14, depending on the extent of the problem.

Service providers such as Viettel and VNPT said they have prepared contingency routes to minimize downtime, although no announcement on the cause of the problem has been made.

The Asia Pacific Gateway cable, which cost US$450 million with a capacity of 54 terabytes per second was launched on January 3 this year to replace the notoriously unreliable Asia America Gateway, which had been hit by disruptions since its launch in 2011. Connecting Japan, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, which has 49 million internet users, the Asia Pacific Gateway took four years to build.
