Mai Chau is situated in the north of Vietnam about 135km to the southwest of the major tourist destination and capital city of Hanoi. One of the top places to visit in the region it is the name of both the province and its main city. The truly wonderful scenic beauty of the area makes this one of the best things to see in the north of the country. However its remote location means that it is not overbooked with tours.

The ethnic minority Black Thai and White Thai people living in Vietnam are found in this area in their traditional stilt houses. The houses provide super photo opportunities, dotted as they are around the valleys, peeping out through the trees. Mai Chau is a mountainous area and indeed the hills and mountains provide a beautiful scenic backdrop wherever you are. The area has many rice farms and the terraces provide more scenic beauty.

The air is cooler here than in many of the other destinations and resorts in the country. Indeed, Vietnamese people from as far away as Ho Chi Minh City will fly up to take a break from the city’s heat. It is a great getaway destination and provides a welcome change from the super-charged nightlife in the big cities. For those searching for a resort of a different kind the Mai Chau Ecolodge is a great place to sleep, eat and drink. make sure to take a look at our blogs for useful Mai Chau guides.
